Equipment and teaching aids can make a lesson more interesting for the students. Several resources are found in a teacher's classroom such as: whiteboards, interactive whiteboards, projectors, CD players, DVDs, video cameras, computers, and many more. The use of media tools can engage the students in a way that a course book may not be able to. So, it is important to to have a good mixture between the two.
Having a board is an essential part of a classroom. They can be used for writing, drawing, projecting transparencies onto. Doing so can hold the attention of the student. Suggested tips for boar usage in this unit include beginning with a clean board, writing neatly, sectioning the board to express different topics, erasing items no longer needed, avoiding using capitalized letters, etc. A more advanced version of a regular whiteboard is an interactive whiteboard. Because of the price range of these smartboards, some schools may not have access to one. There are many capabilities they can have such as being touch sensitive, the ability to detect computer mouse movement, project a computer screen interface onto it, etc. Because this is a high technology machine, there is room for error technically and by the user. Thankfully, most schools will offer training sessions after purchasing interactive whiteboards. It is also always important to have a backup plan in case something goes wrong while trying to use this IWB.
Overheard projectors can act as an alternative to interactive white boards as long as there is a proper surface to project on. This is also a useful tool to maintain the students' attention. Visual aids typically include real object, pictures, and photos. These are useful because they can illustrate meanings more quickly and effectively. There are also great media tools that can enhance the classroom such as cassette recorders (not used often anymore), CD players, DVDs, video cameras, and computers. These all have their own purpose, but can share common goals at times. Paper materials are also suggested in this unit such as dictionaries, course books, resource books, and photocopies. This unit lists several references and websites to refer to for the teacher, which will prove to be helpful in the future.
