This unit gives us a brief but important overview of how to develop students' receptive skills. There are four main skills in general: reading (receptive), listening (receptive), speaking (productive) and writing (productive). It is generally easier for students to understand a written text than to understand a recording. It is simply because they can read the text as many times as they want until they get it, unlike a recording. In either case, whether it is handing out a reading comprehension worksheet or playing a recording, teachers should choose an appropriate and interesting text to work with. This way, students will feel motivated and confident to work. We need to make it comprehensible and pre-teach some difficult words if possible. This can contribute to students' confidence and facility to work with the given text.
