This unit focused on past tenses. While this was a shorter unit, the content was very helpful. There are four types of past tenses: past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. Past simple is the basic form of past tense, and it involves a subject followed the base form of a word with "ed" or "d" attached to the end. The difficult part about past tense is that there are several irregular verbs going between present and past tense. Thankfully, the chapter discusses a few of these, but it will prove difficult for the English learner to memorize them all. The next tense discussed was past continuous. It is used to describe interrupted past actions and to express an action before the designated time which is more than likely to continue afterwards. To form this type of sentence, a subject is followed by was/were and a verb ending in "-ing". Student errors with this type of past tense involve excluding the "to be" verb and adding "-ing" to the ends of verbs. Past perfect is the next item discussed. The subject is followed by "had" and a past participle. It is used to express completely finished actions that happened in the past. A good way to practice this tense with students is to have them tell stories that occurred in the past. This will have the English learner form complete sentences knowing exactly what happened. The final one discussed was past perfect continuous. Though this form is not used often or even taught often, it is still important to be aware of this tense. This is formed by subject + had + been. Of course, there are negative and question forms of all of these tenses. This particular one is to talk about situation or actions that had been going on continuously until a certain point. This unit was helpful in learning the many ways past tense can be spoken in the English language.
