Woodside, California TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
The first unit of this course focused on the different types of teachers and the different types of learners. As a teacher, there are many roles that one can play. Whether it is being an active or passive participant, all of these roles provide a way to help the student learn better. In this unit, we also learned there are different ages of students. For example, the post-puberty students can be the most difficult because of their lack of motivation and self-consciousness. Adult learners who are over the age of 18 are typically self-motivated because learning a new language is something they want to do and they have greater attention spans; however, the desire to do well may make them very nervous about making mistakes. Adult learners may also try to make comparisons of English to their native language, which may lead to troubles overall. There are two younger age groups, elementary and pre-school. Both are very receptive to new information because of their rapidly-developing minds, but their attention spans can be very short. It is important to have several activities prepared to maintain their focus.
This unit also discussed the different language levels of learners. There are six in total: Beginner, Elementary, Low/pre-intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-intermediate, and Advanced. It is important to know what type of learner you are teaching so you can provide a proper lesson plan. Overall, the relationship between teacher and student is important, and a good teacher will find the right balance between all the roles they play in order to be successful.
