Throughout this unit, I learned about evaluation and testing.
Through tutorials, the teacher can review the students' work. And through evaluation by the students, the students can discuss with the teacher (or a quick questionnaire worksheet) on the balance of work in the classroom and what improvements they would like to see.
In the course, I mostly learned the different types of testing and the importance of each. While teaching, it is often needed to give tests at different stages throughout the whole learning and teaching process. Some types of these test are:
Placement tests are needed to ensure new students are placed in their correct class.
Progress tests should be given periodically and used to see what language a student has acquired and was has been forgotten; though many teachers might choose not to do this testing if they see the students on a regular basis.
Diagnostic tests are similar to placement tests, as they are given to students at the beginning of the course to see what the students strengths and weaknesses are, so the teacher can plan lessons accordingly.
Practice tests help prepare students for external examination, and thus should follow the format and structure of the exam.
There are multiple types of external examinations, such as TOEFL, IELTS, and TOEIC. TOFEL is used for admission in universities in USA. IELTS is the ideal test for working or studying abroad in an English dominated country. And TOEIC tests the ability for English skills used in work-place.
