I learned much on reporting speech and conditionals throughout this unit.
I learned about the differences in direct and reported speech, as well as how to change direct into reported speech. Direct speech usually uses commas to be able to repeat what was exactly said. Since reported speech describes what is being said, to change direct into reported speech you would need to (most of the time) change the tense of the sentence. For instance, if the direct speech is spoken in present simple tense, then it would be changed to past simple for reported speech.
Conditionals are sentences containing 'if' or 'when' which can refer to the past, present, and future possibilities. There are two parts of each sentence, the 'if' clause that has to be completed before the action in the main clause can be done. There are five main types of conditionals:
The zero conditional is used when someone talks about something that is generally true, such as something that is scientifically proven.
The first conditional talks about something that could happen in the future.
The second conditional is used for unreal situations that are unlikely happen in the present or future.
The third conditional is used to talk about a hypothetical action someone could have taken in the past.
The mixed conditional is a mix of the second and third conditional clause. It states the hypothetical past condition and what might have been the result in the present if that past condition was met.
