The unit covers different styles of TEFL practices and which ones are mostly used by English teachers; the most effective appearing to be Engage, Study, and Activate. I learned about the different ways for this style of teaching can be engaged in the classroom. In the engage phase, the teacher can make up different ways to get the students involved such as different activities, like 'I spy'. In the study phase, the students focus more on the construction of the language. The study phase starts with eliciting information from the students, then giving exercises to reinforce the material. The activate stage is where the students use the information they learned and use it more freely to be able to focus on fluency of the language. Using different activities such as role-playing would be a great benefit in this phase. I have learned that the phases of ESA can be engaged in different ways to accommodate to different students. If needed, instead of the typical straight-arrow technique, a boomerang or patchwork ESA lesson can be applied, as long as it starts with the engage phase and ends with the activate phase. Throughout these phases, feedback is important as well. Pointing out what a student has done well on is just as important at pointing out corrections that need to be made. However, corrections can be self corrected and student to student corrected. Teacher to student corrections should only be made as a last resort, giving a chance to the student or students to identify and fix the problem themselves.
