From this unit I learned a great deal about classroom management. In particular, how a teacher can use gestures, their voice and eye contact in a classroom to communicate and manage the class. It was interesting to learn how non-verbal cues could be used to communicate and encourage participation. For example, eye contact can be used to encourage, correct and even hold attention. To reduce teacher talking time gestures are equally a key part of classroom management as they convey leaning, add visual interest and can even change the pace of the lesson. Managing a class is essentially about finding the right balance between teacher talk time and student talk time and creating an engaging environment conducive for learning. To achieve this a teacher needs to be flexible and change their role according to the activity that is being completed. It seemed as though the unit focused on reducing TTT and encouraging STT. This is probably due to the fact that the more students are actively participating in a lesson the more learning that is taking place. I found the advice about giving instructions particular enlightening. If an activity has simple clear instructions, and has been supported by a visual demonstration there is more time for STT in a lesson. Preparation and organization are vital in ensuring that the balance between STT and TTT are achieved.
