Nunn, Colorado TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit covers the roles and the responsibilities of both the teacher and the student. First I learned that good teachers share the same characteristics. They are kind, patient, love teaching, and are knowledgeable on their subject. They build rapport in the class and are considerate of the students. They also should be lively and entertaining, motivating the students to succeed. I also learned that as a teacher you fill many different roles. You are the manager, the organizer, a model, a participant, a resource, a monitor and sometimes a prompter. You will need to conduct each of these roles accordingly, providing your students with the resources to learn.
Good students also share similar traits. They are motivated, willing to listen to the language, and willing to accept correction. They have the ability to think about their own learning process and a desire to experiment.
However good students are not the only group of students sharing characteristics. We learn that students of similar age share traits as well. One example would be that an adult student is more likely to be motivated as they have made the choice to learn the language, whereas children are more likely there because they have to be. Another being that whereas children ages 6 or below would respond better to singing and drawing, a teenager would be less likely to appreciate it. It is the responsibility of the teacher to adjust to the group of students they are teaching.
Finally I learned about the language levels. Beginner, Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-intermediate, and Advanced in successive order.
