Throughout this unit I learned more about the past tenses: past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous.
The past simple tense is shown when something is done at a definite time in the past, sometimes by adding on a '-ed' or '-d' at the end of a verb. However, there are many irregular verbs to prove that rule isn't always the case, such as the present form 'see' is 'saw' as its past tense.
The past continuous tense uses the words 'was' or 'were' along with a time reference (or gradual development over time) in a sentance/ question; for example, The sun was setting.
The past perfect tense shows an action that was completed in the past before something else happened after that; by using the word 'had'.
The past perfect continuous tense tells us that an action started before a certain time in the past and continued until that time, but we are not concerned if it continued after that time. This tense also uses the words 'had' and 'been' together in a sentence.
