The key to lesson planning it seems to be flexible. Have an anticipated amount of time for the activity, but be prepared for anticipated and unanticipated problems. The lesson plan should have both learner and teacher objectives (the goals for the students and teacher respectively), the language point that will be discussed that day, what materials are needed, and any anticipated problems that may come up as well as their solution. After all this comes the actual procedure of the class, which should follow some variation of the ESA methodology. At the end of the class, the teacher should make adjustments to future lesson plans based on a self-evaluation of how the lesson went. This especially applies to sequences of lessons where students are aiming for a more long term goal. In such lessons, constant revision is key to make sure students do not forget what was learned in the previous lesson as new concepts are added on.
