This unit covered how to teach the receptive skills of reading and listening. There are a variety of reasons why we read and listen, such as scanning for information or skimming for the general idea. We also utilize predictive skills so that we may know what a text or audio clip might be talking about based on the headline. It is often tricky because there may be a lot of vocabulary that the students do not yet understand. This is especially difficult for audio because it is not possible to go back and reread the text to gather the meaning. In order to keep students engaged, it is important to pre-teach the relevant vocabulary so that the students have a better chance of understanding and interacting with the audio and even written material. Topics should be varied so that all students are catered to throughout the lessons.
