To adequately captivate students, teachers can use a variety of methods, each emphasizing a different balance of teacher and student engagement. The Engage, Study, Activate method is perhaps the most helpful. In the first stage, the teacher attempts to captivate student interest with an activity or elicitation that is often somewhat related to the lesson for the day. Then the teacher focuses on the grammar, vocabulary, or other key concepts in the Study stage before concluding with the Activate stage. This final stage permits students to creatively use their new vocabulary and grammar skills in an engaging way. While the technique is labeled ESA, the actual order of each of the stages can be mixed around in accordance with the amount of time a teacher has and the content of the lesson.
