TROUBLESHOOTING Common Problem Situations Much like the previous lesson when the teacher is meeting his/her students for the first time, the teacher needs to do a level test, needs analysis, group needs negotiation, plan out the syllabus. 1. First and foremost, build a rapport between teacher/student, and student/student. Friendly Teacher: Greets, introduces and welcomes each student in to his/her classroom. Friendly Teacher: Points out house rule e.g. "We only speak English here!" Friendly Teacher: Encourages students to introduce themselves to the classroom with activity 'Pass the ball' = "My name is Isabel" --> "My name is ..." 2. Warmer............................................................ Friendly Teacher: Encourages students to briefly walk around the classroom and introduce themselves to each/[as many as] of their fellow members again, but this time to ask a question [teacher points to the board and clearly demonstrates] "Hello, my name is Isabel, are you happy or sad?" [draw emojis] Activity 'Ice breaker' ...Time's up! Feedback, laughter and wee banter. Rapport has been established and start of SST. Next, teacher now hands out, demonstrates and asks students to complete a pre-set questionnaire and then feedback to the class. Purpose: It allows the students to get to know about each other and, whilst the teacher intently observes/listens, he/she will learn a lot about the students' level of ability in English language as well as their interests. Next, teacher hands out, demonstrates and asks students to complete a [needs analysis] questionnaire. Give feedback to the student sitting next to her/him [pairwork]. Again teacher monitors. Teacher elicits from students some of their interests (ice breaker), what they need from the course and where do they want to be in 5-10 years time. [teacher writes points on the board] S-S activity: Teacher hands out a set of questions for students to walk around the class and ask e.g. "What do you do [profession = for a living]?", "If you are a [profession], do you...?" **[teacher participates in activities too, specially when I see a 'freeze' moment.] Apart from the above activities/needs in this introductory 1st-lesson the teacher still has to take into account further factors: The size of class, the age level gaps, the culture, their different personalities and present moods. All this combined, along with a sensibly positive and organised teacher can turn his/her English language lessons productive, fun, motivating and successful. N.B. One-on-one Placement test can be used to evaluate the language level of each student, before student is placed in the correct English level class. =================================================================================================== FYI I'm totally impressed with this course. Well thought out and 'jammy-jam-packed' with information! I even surprised myself, by going back to school and being tested. The units on tenses, parts of speech, conditionals, phrasal verbs, etc. all intense but I strived and competed each time with my follow-up results. I thouroughly enjoyed the teacher/student roles, theories, management, evaluation, etc there is so much I didn't know about. But my favourite part of this course by far is ESA teaching concept. I can not wait to use the ESA++ method in my classes. I want my students to be motivated and have a lot of fun while learning. I myself am a visual person and can relate to this teaching concept wholeheartedly. Who would have guessed, that I would have a couple of 100% test results? And proceded to sulk at the silly errors I made, knowing full well that I needed to read the questions carefully, and take time to absorb (I'm working on my weakness). But hey-ho, I deserved every bit of it. T.H.A.N.K. Y.O.U!! (since you cannot see me jumping with joy, lol)
