My list selection of EQUIPMENT & TEACHING AIDS in priority order and why:
---1 Board - Start and end off lessons with a clean board. Plan my lessons beforehand and organise
them on a piece of paper first. Coloured sections and columns [vocab/grammar/notes] can be visually
appealing so I plan to be creative.
- natural handwriting must be clear separate lettering, accurate for students to copy down,
in preportion with the board and be visible at the back of the classroom. NO capitalised
- use student involvement while writing, it's good interaction and motivation
- for [language points/irregularities/differences] emphasis, use colouring, underlining, circling
- [keypoints] - use brief writing
---2 Coursebook - I have to think which items of the lesson will motivate my students and which need to
be supplemented, adapted, or replaced.
The priority of my lesson planning from the course book will be 'balance'.
I want to research further on ways to include variety with the needs of my students in mind
e.g. the ability to understand in reference to language difficulties, students' culture, age, etc.
It'll be very useful for me to plan and organise task times within my lesson too.
---3 Resource book- get 1000's of ideas to make lessons more interesting and stimulating for my students.
I will certainly use it to adapt, supplement and replace material from my course book.
---4 Worksheets - I will use worksheets and work cards to adapt or supplement my lessons.
e.g. prompts, write up my own exercices with authentic material, use for vocab, grammar, etc.
There is no limit to creative ideas for sure. Some will be laminated for protection for damage.
---5 Dictionary - I will have physical dictionaries and encourage my students to search online too.
Physical dictionaries to look up for English word/sentence definitions in lesson.
Online dictionaries for students who have access to a computer/laptop.
I will focus primarily on the Learner's dictionary by Oxford University Press (OUP)
[elementary/intermediate/advanced], as this tool is most useful for students and teacher alike.
It applies to understand, producing and developing all four language skills
e.g. meaning, usage, pronunciation, and produce language.
---6 Visuals - I will use visually appealing and reasonably sized visuals as part of my lessons,
e.g. pictures, real objects, photos, etc. or as permanent fixture in the classroom, e.g. charts, maps, etc.
I'll use it for presenting new vocab items, drills, for prompts in communication games, prompts for
story building, etc. It will attract attention and helps elicit learning and memory stimulus.
Common illustration is a faster alternative to verbal explanation. It effectively translates the
meaning to the teaching subject, thus reducing my TTT.
I want the students to be able to visually explore the world in the classroom too. So, ideas like visual aids set as the context, e.g. a picture of a market, town centre, clothing on the board, etc.
Drawing on the board while eliciting on every stroke, is another way to stimulate interaction.
---7 Video camera - I would use my smartphone to record my students during the activity and then
playback to them for analysis and discussion. If students also have a smartphone, I'll definitely
encourage them to do the same. e.g. to try on recording the activity, create their own news
broadcast, go out onto the streets to record interviews as part of a survey, etc and then share
their creativity with the class.
Today, smartphones come with good HD quality audio/video recording apps and users are tech savvy.
---8 Photocopier - I have at my disposal.
Plan ahead on what materials are needed for the lesson's e.g student headcount and/or teacher's lesson plan
- make sure copies are attractively presented and clear.
- laminate for longevity
