From this unit I learnt that when teaching grammar, vocabulary and functions there are certain types of ESA lessons that are more/less appropriate. The key is to plan effectively and be flexible in picking which structure works best for the lesson objective in the context of your own class. In the teaching of vocabulary for example a typical straight arrow ESA lesson is often useful. You have got to select the new vocabulary to teach carefully based on how appropriate it will be for students and the task, and how teachable it is. In teaching vocabulary students need to know meaning, use, word grammar, interaction, spelling and pronunciation. The ESA patchwork structure is useful when teaching grammar. It enables students to understand meaning, use, forms and patterns and experience grammar in spoken and written forms. Its flexible nature facilitates learning of grammar. The ESA boomerang lesson is particularly adapted to teaching language functions. Its formation of Engage-Activate-Study-Activate enables an increased STT and in turn allows students to put language functions into practice with their peers.
