When I used to be an English language student, I've seen many different teaching techniques. I was born in 1987 and in 2010-2011 I studied for the CAE exam. And I remember our teacher using the ESA method. He always started with some engaging activity in order to wake us up, after that he could teach the lesson he wanted to teach and then use it on a debate or any other speaking activity. Obviously, he wasn't a new teacher so he could use the patchwork method of the ESA. We never knew what he was going to do. Obviously, we had the book and we could kind of foresee what the lesson is going to be like.
Today, I'm working as an English teacher in a language school teaching children. The school gave me the books in order to teach English and now that I've studied this lesson of the TEFL course, and I compare the ESA method with the Teacher's Book, I see that even English teaching books publishers are more aware of the usefulness of the ESA method.
For example, I'm working with Macmillan books and, at every lesson, there's a section called "warm-up". Which can be the same as the "Engage" stage. Then it continues with the lesson to teach the students and at the end an activity in order to help students make the point clear in their minds. I've seen that my students really enjoy learning English as well as willing to attend to the next class. Therefore, the ESA method is the best of our days.
