Many lessons we are going to teach may include three main directions: vocabulary, grammar and language functions. Grammar is said to be the trunk of a tree as vocabulary and language functions are the leaves and fruits. If a language could be imagined as a body, I would also call grammar the spine or the skeleton when the others would be the muscles. Most likely, they will be taught separately in order to make learning of each area more effective.
When teaching grammar teachers should get across such points as meaning, use, forms and patterns as long as the difference between spoken and written forms of a new structure.
When teaching vocabulary the teacher should introduce the following aspects: meaning, use, word grammar, spelling and pronunciation.
Language functions are, basically, a purpose of learning it because it is the part when the students can apply everything they have learnt including grammar and vocabulary to real-life situations. Therefore, at
this stage learning should imitate the real life. Role-plays, debates and even drama can be very effective.
