This unit teaches some of the practical skills needed to conduct classes effectively - namely how to organise and manage classes, and establishing a conducive environment for learning, without compromising on discipline that may be required in certain situations. Skills such as knowing how much eye contact to make, appropriate amount of gesturing, and variation in the tones and volumes of our voices when communicating with students to ensure an effective lesson. The reminder about the posture of the teacher in different situations - such as standing when giving instructions, and being seated when the activity is student-centred is sometimes overlooked when the teacher is either too tired, or over-enthusiastic. Other aspects of this unit talks about the physical set up of the classroom, depending on the size and type of furniture available, and this too influences the learning environment, on top of the students' behaviour. We are taught about how to group the students wisely, in order to encourage them to learn and build rapport with one another. This is important as it will affect how lessons progress as it determines the responses of the students to one another and to the teacher in class. We are also instructed on how we can build a healthy rapport with the students, which will help when we communicate instructions to the class and when we want to maintain a decent level of discipline in the class. This unit gives useful suggestions how to prevent behavioural issues from arising in class, and how to address the problems, should they arise. Information about the possible root of the behavioural problems gives us more insight on how to approach the students with sensitivity and empathy to improve the situation.
