This lesson was an overview of three important grammar concepts: modals, phrasal verbs, and passive voice. First, we are given the various uses of modals in terms of expression of ideas as well as formality in speaking and writing. Along with this, we are shown examples of modals in relation to present, future, and past tense. Second, unit 18 provides background on how to properly implement the passive voice including an in-depth look at relative clauses. Finally, the three types of phrasal verbs are examined. In this unit, my biggest takeaway was the uniqueness of phrasal verbs and how they should be explained as vocabulary to ESL students. Because such verbs are special to the English language and not always easily translated to other languages or cultures, it was helpful to receive further explanation of this subject.
