Midway Park, Delaware TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit we went through some most known methodologies for teaching English. We started with the most common methodologies from history which are still used today. We have learned that the most popular methodologies doesn't have to be the most effective ones. After that we had a closer look on the ESA (Engage, Study and Activate) method, which is the most effective and most logical of all methodologies for new teachers. ESA was introduce by Jeremy Harmer in 1998 in his book called: "How to teach English". Every lesson should start always with the stage of Engage (to arouse the students' interest and get them involved. Every lesson should finish with the stage Activate, where we trying to encouraged students to use any of the language they know. Between those phases we can be flexible with our structure. So we do not have to always fallow only engage - study - activate but we can have use for example engage - activate - study - activate. It is important to change these structures as if we don't the lessons may become predictible and students may loos their interest. At the end of the topic we had learn about correction techniques and what should teacher correct. It is important to never jump into a students' speech when we want to correct them. It is appropriate to correct students more during study phase but during engage part correction should be kept to a minimum.
