In this Unit I have learned Past Tenses. There are four past tenses: Past Simple is a tense which is used to describe actions or events in the past. Structure. Affirmative: subject+base form ed/d for example I worked yesterday. Many common verbs in English have an irregular simple past form. Unfortunately, there are no rules to help students to know which are irregular, or how they are formed. Past Simple is used for past action when the time is given for example I met my husband in summer 2018. Past Continuous tense refers continuing action or state that was happening at some point in the past. Affirmative: subject + was/were + verb ing for example We were playing tennis. This tense is used for interrupted past actions, used without time expression, use in descriptions. Past Perfect is a tense used to talk about actions that were completed before some point in the past. Affirmative: subject + had + past participle for example When they arrived they realised that they had lost keys. This tense is used to represent actions that occurred before other actions in the past. Past Perfect is the past in the past or the past viewed from another past viewpoint. Past Perfect Continuous shows that an action that started in the past continued up until another time in the past. Affirmative: subject + had + been + verb ing Before cooking dinner, she had been studying for four hours. This tense is not frequently used but one major use is to talk about longer actions or situations in the past that had been going on continuously up to the past moment that we are thinking about.
