There are common challenges that teachers may face in the classroom. Of these challenges are how to approach a first class lesson, either with a new group or an existing group, how to incorporate warmers at the start of the class to engage the students, how to handle different language levels in the same classroom, how to facilitate a large class, how to handle the situation of students using their native language in class, how to encourage reluctant students to participate, and how to support students in difficulties with listening texts. This unit offered valuable learning in being equipped with the tools to resolve potential classroom challenges and to have greater awareness of the classroom dynamics. The unit provided suggested solutions for each specific challenge. This included the importance of building rapport and understanding the students’ needs in the first lesson through activities rather than relying on the coursebook. Warmers as well should be fun and short to motivate students in using the English language and would be ideal to have the warmer activities linked with the lesson plan’s Study phase. Other teaching techniques, such as the use of materials for the appropriate level and situation, pairing students, appointing group leaders, role playing and using worksheets, serve as solutions for each specific challenge at hand. Being aware of these potential problem situations and learning ways of dealing with them would help teachers better serve the needs of students and create an effective positive learning atmosphere.
