Modals are used to express a variety of ideas and come before other verbs in order to add meaning to the main verb. They can also be used to express varying degrees of formality.
We also explored the use of the two voices used in English. The passive voice and the active voice allow the user to change the focus of a sentence.
In the passive, the object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb.
The unit continued with a look at the three clauses in the English language. The independent clause, dependent clause, and relative clause each have a particular use and often build upon each other. An independent clause is a complete sentence, while a dependent clause must be connected to an independent clause.
The unit concluded with an overview of phrasal verbs.They are multi-word verbs which consist of a verb plus one or two particles.
