The key things I have learnt from this unit are the different ways lessons can be conducted using the ESA method. The options of the 'straight arrow', 'boomerang' and 'patchwork' ESA lessons offers me a lot of flexibility in lesson planning for students of different language competencies. The examples of activities for each phase of the lessons are especially useful, and it helps that the aims and objectives of each stage is clearly articulated in this unit. Having a clear idea of the type of outcome to expect from each stage helps to keep me focused when thinking about what activities to implement to engage and facilitate the learning process of the students.
Another part of this unit that I find beneficial is the section that teaches us how and when to correct the students' mistakes or errors. It is definitely good to remember to be positive and encouraging when communicating with the students, and to avoid situations that may deter students from speaking up in class. The idea of giving the students the opportunity to correct themselves first is also excellent, as it helps them realise where they made the mistake and thus remember it better. This unit is will come in very handy when I do my lesson planning in the future.
