As a native English speaker I actually found this unit the most challenging and I can understand why phonology is often neglected in the EFL classroom. I hadn’t before considered the complexities of the English language in that words that are spelt similarly are not pronounced in the same way. This must make learning English particularly challenging in regards to pronunciation. I have also never previously studied the International phonetic alphabet – which although makes logical sense is somewhat complex to interpret. I imagine it takes some time to become familiar with which sounds each symbol represents. I also learnt about annotation and stress and the roles each play in the fluent use of language.
