I enjoyed this lesson a lot!
Unbeknown to me, even though basic, I found out a lot on this topic of pronunciation and phonology.
Thank you.
A teacher may find it intimidating due to lack of knowledge and how to incorporate it into the
lesson syllabus.
Again, there are two parts: pronunciation and phonology.
PRONUNCIATION is probably the most neglected
Most pronunciation teaching focus on 'individual sounds' which is not the most important part.
There is the phonetic sounds of rise and fall of a word, volume (intonation), rhythm,
'feelings' and/or 'reactions' sounding for instance.
e.g. YES!, or YES?, or YES (with stress).
Skilled pronunciation gives life indeed. e.g. George Bernard Shaw's poem tickled me.
Adding stress on a word or a syllable part of a word brings feeling or reaction.
e.g. "He just hammered his fingers with the hammer."
He ... he, did it.
just ... this very moment.
hammered ... with force.
his ... no one else's fingers.
fingers ... ouch! pain.
the ... that particular hammer.
hammer ... meant to be hammer or somthing else?
Sound Joining and Linked speech
The 4 main joining sounds are: the word linking, the (t/d) sound dropping, extra lettering
and changing of sound.
Joining sound = main 4-ways to connect sounds in English
1. Linking - e.g. I'll leave = I'leave...
2. Sound dropping (t,d) - e.g. butty = bu'ee.
3. Sound changing - e.g. flower = flowa.
4. Extra lettering - e.g. I'm drawing a picture = I'm draring a pikcha (+sound changing).
Linked speech - When students observe/hear how the English native naturally speaks, and then
practices the 'linking of words' in his/her speech, he/she's will be more likely to sound natural.
PHONOLOGY - phonetic chart/symbols
I've picked an iphone app from Cambridge English Online ...
to practice phonemic alphabet chart and play the games.
By familiarising with the phonemic alphabet as a foreign student or native English speaking person
the focus is on 'sounds' needed to produce a word .. to find sound/symbol .. add the phoneme/not
traditional spelling e.g. nau [sound] = for saying 'now'.
Students can read out loud the phonemic spelling and produce a sentence.
Articulation, using which speech organs and manner of articulation.
Speech organs: palatal, alveolar, palatal-alveolar, dental, labio-dental, bilabial and glottal.
Manner of articulation: plosive, fricative, affricative, nasal... lateral, aproximant.
Voiced or non-voiced consonants, which part of the mouth produces it, and what manner is the sound
articulated.
