Unit 11 covers many problems that might arise within the standard ESL classroom. Things like first lessons can have many different problems depending if the class is a new group or existing group. In both types of groups it's important that the teacher builds a strong rapport with the students by using 'get to you know you' style activities and fun warmers. With new groups it's important that the teacher aims at building relationships between the students themselves. Having a class with different levels can also be challenging however there are a few techniques that can be used. Using different material and splitting the class into different groups allows higher level and lower level students to work at the their desired pace. Pairing strong students with weaker students is also beneficial for both students as stronger students solidify their knowledge by helping the weaker students. Large groups can be difficult to get all students participating therefore it's encouraged to work in pairs or groups. Worksheets also allow each student to participate in the classroom and are a great activity for the study section of a lesson. Having group leaders and helpers will also make big classes run smoothly as they can hand out worksheets or collect material. Reluctant students are common in all types of classes. With these types of students it's important to use pair and group work, role play activities and controlled practice to help build their confidence.
