Unit 1 Overview
A good teacher is able to motivate all students in the class with their support, knowledge, and model behavior by playing many roles including: manager, facilitator, organizer, and assessor. Teachers should create a rapport with their students so they, the students, feel comfortable in their learning environment and speak up even if they make mistakes. EFL teachers are the English speaking model, act as the main resource for their students, organize and facilitate group work, and assess students’ responses.
Ideally, a good EFL student is ready and willing to learn, motivated, creative, comfortable asking questions, able to receive criticism, and well behaved, but unfortunately, this is not always the case due to outside factors including home life and other stressors. Teaching young learners has its own challenges compared to teaching adult learners, especially when some youth are not motivated, nervous, or have behavioral issues. Students are divided according to language ability (beginner, elementary, low-intermediate, intermediate, upper-intermediate , and advanced) and it is the teacher’s job to recognize and assess their English development. Students will learn that English is a valuable asset that can be used in multiple venues to travel, talk with other English speaking people and share different perspectives and cultures.
