We are introduced to lesson planning in unit nine (i.e. Functions, how should a lesson plan be written, its organization, what should be in the lesson, monitoring your lessons and planning a sequence of lessons). Lesson planning is very essential when it comes to teaching. Lesson planning allows you to focus on what u plan to teach for the day. Although lesson planning is good, it can at times make lessons too rigid and stop the teacher from being flexible to students. Inexperienced teachers would find it difficult to be flexible as required or allow students to decide what to do in class as they would not be prepared to deal with some problems that may arise from vocabulary or grammar. Notwithstanding, writing a lesson plan helps in the following ways: Lesson planning helps the teacher to write down what he/she expects the students to achieve by the end of the lesson and how to make it possible. Lesson planning also serves as a working document which helps the teacher to stay on target and be able to refer to in case the teacher loses target. Finally, it serves as a future record that allows you to see what the class has already covered, what still needs to be covered and what props have been used. It also allows other teachers like substitutes to see where you have left off and what material you have already covered with the class. There is no special way to write a lesson plan. Some teachers may just jot down notes, some may log details into class notebooks or write formal plans. Which ever way fits the teacher is ok. The basic principles of lesson writing are: keep it simple, do not try and script a lesson, keep it flexible and open to adaptation, check for balance of skills (make sure lessons fit together to give the lesson a steady flow) etc. It is very important to be organized, as a result there are a few things one can do to make the lesson go smoothly: Check that you have a lesson plan, run through the lesson and make sure you have everything, make sure equipment for the lesson work, arrange seating if you need to, be ready to greet students once they walk into the class, this helps to break the ice. A good lesson plan should include learners objectives personal aims, language point, reading aids, anticipated problem for both teacher and student, procedure, phase, timing, interactions, class level, number of students, date/time, teachers and observers name. monitoring is very important as it helps teachers to monitor the quality of his/her lessons, and helps in self-evaluation. Monitoring should include making notes of what went well and where the lesson would have improved. This helps to see the teachers progress as well.
