In unit ten we are introduced to two ESA demonstration videos. The same lesson is being taught in each video, however one lesson is being taught effectively and the other one is being taught making a number of basic errors. The purpose of this unit is for teachers to be able to analyze or compare good or bad teaching errors found in the two lessons, and thus be able to make the right decisions when found in the classroom. Things to note in the two videos are the teacher and student attitude, student participation, teachers voice, teachers explanation and instructions, monitoring of students and the way the ESA lesson is being used. One of the many comparisons which one should notice is the teachers attitude towards the students and how his/her attitude can affect the students own attitude towards the lesson or teacher. The attitude of the teacher can determine class participation and student understanding of the lesson. The teachers voice (clarity, complexity, speed etc) can also determine the students understanding and participation of a lesson. the teacher should take into consideration the English level of his/her students. In a classroom of intermediate English students, the language used may be more complex and fluent as compared to a class of basic learners. The teachers voice should show some enthusiasm and be audible enough to draw the interest of the students. Student participation depends on the style of teaching which the teacher decides to use in the classroom. As mentioned in previous unit lessons, a lesson where teachers talk less and concentrate on eliciting questions from students or organizing individual or group activities would increase student activities. Teachers should make sure that all students participate at stages of the lesson Teachers explanation and instructions should be kept simple and precise. The use of pictures, charts, mimes etc. can be used to help so as to give the students a better understanding of a lesson or exercise. We can see in videos one and two how the teacher uses pictures and mimes to better explain a lesson. In videos one and two, we see the teacher taking a few seconds to monitor the students while they are trying to complete the exercise. This helps the teacher to know if the students are doing the exercise correctly and if the lesson has been understood. The type of ESA lesson being used in the classroom by the teacher should depend on the teachers personality, culture of the student, their needs and what you expect your students to achieve by the end of the lesson. teachers should try to be more flexible when it comes to the way they teach. Using one style like the `Straight Arrow‘ lesson can bore your students as they will be able to predict your lessons. also, the level of your students may also determine the kind of teaching method you would like to use. For instance the `Boomerang‘ ESA lesson could be used for students of a higher level. In my opinion the students in these two videos are students of pre-intermediate level. They are able to understand and communicate on a range of topics but they lack fluency, depth of language awareness and till made many errors with basic structures.
