Unit 11 was all about teaching receptive skills. There are four basic skills when learning language. The receptive skills are reading and listening. The productive skills are speaking and writing. Learning a new language is not easy. There are many strategies that teachers can employ to make the process easier and more engaging. For example, teachers can pre-teach vocabulary that is essential to understanding. They can also carefully select texts that are both interesting to the students and target what teachers hope the students will learn. Different skills that readers and listeners employ are predictive skills, scanning, skimming, reading for detailed information, and deduction from context. These are some of the key topics discussed in Unit 11.
