Unit 15 looks at evaluation of students level and progress and testing.
Student’s language level can be assessed using tutorials, test, and evaluation by the students.
There are five types of test: placement, diagnostic, progress, practice and proficiency tests.
Placement tests can be used to form the groups of the same level students. Usually schools use multiple choice questions and spoken interview to check the students. The written part of placement tests include some general questions that need to be answered.
Diagnostic tests are used to indicate student’s knowledge before the course. These tests are similar to placement tests but they are more extensive.
Progress tests are needed to indicate how students are progressing. Such tests are used periodically and help teacher and students know what items need more work.
Practice test are used to prepare for external examination.
External proficiency tests are not related to the course but measure the proficiency in English at a particular level. The examples of external tests are following: TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE, etc.
