This unit focused on the two productive skills of speaking and writing. As people speak and write to communicate their needs and desires, this should be kept in mind when preparing lessons such that activities are geared toward topics the students will be interested in and have the language skills to produce. Speaking lessons will address accuracy (vocabulary/grammar structure) and fluency (ability to speak without stopping) in the use of the language. Accuracy is addressed in the study phase and fluency in the activate stage; both are equally important. Speaking activities are controlled (study phase), guided (study and activate phases) or use creative communication (activate phase) as the lesson progresses, moving students from structured learning to the free/creative use of the language. Writing lessons are similar, but require students to use the language in a more formal way (fewer contractions, etc.). Lessons will also need to address subskills like handwriting, spelling and punctuation/layout. The unit provided example straight-arrow ESA lessons for both productive skills, and then finished with a section on the use of games to promote student interest and enjoyment. As I have no teaching background, the section on games (with associated websites) was of particular practical help.
