Although some teachers are hesitant to specifically teach pronunciation because of lack of confidence or training, it truly is an important skill to teach English students so that they can most effectively communicate. Familiarity with the International Phonetic Alphabet gives students the ability to correctly learn and speak words regardless of irregular English spelling, but pronunciation includes not only the phonetics of individual sounds, but the stress of syllables and the intonation of sentences, because the students need to be able to express feelings, reactions, and emotions appropriately as they form known words into sentences. The actual articulation of individual sounds using the organs of speech in the mouth and throat is categorized into place of articulation (where the tongue and other organs are coming together) and manner of articulation (how the air passes through the spaces created by the position of the organs). Demonstrating how the mouth forms the sounds can really help students learn how to produce them and speak correct English. Teachers must not assume students can reproduce the sounds correctly just by hearing them. Pronunciation can be taught as stand-alone lessons, incorporated into other speaking lessons, or inserted when needed, but it should not be neglected altogether.
