Blairsville, Georgia TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit I learned that the relationship between teachers and learners is an important and intricate issue. I learned that to be considered a good teacher one should possess certain personality traits (being kind, patient, ebullient, and inspirational) which can allow the teacher to more effectively communicate and interact with his/her students in helping them learn. A good teacher must also 'wear many hats'. In other words, the teacher must play many roles (as a manager, organizer, assessor, promoter, participant, tutor, resource, model, and observer) in the classroom to facilitate the learning process. Getting experience slipping in and out of these roles seamlessly is the key to becoming a great teacher.
In this unit I also learned that certain factors come into play when teaching the English language. Factors such as age, culture, language level, and motivation for learning. Age can be an issue in terms of how effective a teacher can be to convey learning. The younger the learner the more open they are to new learning experiences and methods whereas older students may have a more fixed view of how they should be taught. Different cultures, too, have different approaches to learning. A good teacher should be aware of the customs and differences among his or her students and adjust accordingly to maximize the success of what they are trying to teach the students. Furthermore, the students level of proficiency in speaking English has to be considered in order for the teacher to craft an effective lesson plan. Are they beginners, mid-level, or higher level speakers of English. Lastly, the motivation of the student should be considered. Why do they want to learn English? Regardless of the reason, it is the teacher's responsibility to make learning enjoyable, interesting, varied, and useful in order to maintain or build the student's motivation.
