True learning involves a good teacher and good learners. Each must possess several characteristics in order to achieve a successful learning outcome, in this case, learning and using the English language. In order to teach well, teachers must be knowledgeable, passionate about teaching and learning, energetic, relational, discerning, honest, sensitive to students and their culture and circumstances, competent and authoritative yet gentle, and invested in the students and their success. In order to learn well, students must have a desire to learn, the ability to accept suggestion and correction, a willingness to overcome their nervousness about speaking the new language, and ownership of the content, process, and outcome. Students of language progress through stages in their competency, and teachers must be able to identify their level and how to best assist them in progressing to the next level. Teachers must be prepared to fulfill various roles in the learning process according to the need of the moment, whether standing up front directly presenting information, planning and leading group activities, giving one on one attention, or assessing students' grasp of the material. It is important for class sessions to contain varied instruction to keep students engaged in the learning process, with the ultimate goal being becoming better and more natural users of the English language in real-life situations.
