In this unit I learnt about modals, phrasal verbs and the passive voice. Modals can be used to express many different ideas such as obligation, possibility, permission, ability and advice. Each modal has specific uses. Must, have to, need to are often used to express necessity or obligation. Can, could, able to are often used to express ability. In addition, the unit taught how each tense can be transformed into the passive voice. For example, to transform the past simple to passive the formation is was/were + past participle. The passive is often used when the doer of the action isn’t important or present. Finally, the unit discussed three types of phrasal verbs type 1 intransitive, type 2 transitive separable and type 3, transitive inseparable. Although it isn’t complicated to understand that phrasal verbs are multi-word verbs consisting of a verb plus one or two particles, I struggled to differentiate between the three types.
