In this unit I learned about how different ESA methods are used to teach students grammar, vocabulary and functions. Selecting the appropriate level of vocabulary for students is based on the task they are asked to complete and by how teachable is the task. The teacher must also consider how often the students are likely to use the language and how it can be applied in different situations. Students need to know the meaning of a new vocabulary word, how to use the word in a sentence, how it interacts and affects other words, and how it is spelled, pronounced, and written. The ease or difficulty of the ESA method used (Straight Arrow, Boomerang, or Patchwork) will depend on the comprehension level of the class being taught. As well as vocabulary and grammar, language is also made up of functions. Areas such as inviting, refusing, agreeing and disagreeing, suggesting, etc. are included in language functions. Teaching language functions also involves the type of language the students will use- formal, informal, tentative, technical etc. Language function lessons stress the importance of activation of the language and therefore a Boomerang or Patchwork ESA lesson may work best.
