Teachers of EFL have many options for teaching materials, including, but not limited to, published course books and their accompanying materials. Although course books can be beneficial because they provide structure, scope, and sequence for specific levels as well as teacher guidance and pre-printed student assignments, they can also be limiting because they are not personalized for a specific group of students and may not allow for opportunities for teacher creativity. Teachers should be able to omit material from course books that will not meet the students' needs, replace that material if need be with more appropriate material, supplement what is lacking, and adapt lessons in ways that work better. Teachers may bring in authentic materials if they are chosen carefully to match the level of the students. This is an example of supplementing with real-world content to build student confidence using English in real-life situations. Teachers have nearly unlimited possibilities for the use of created materials such as puzzles, games, visuals, and worksheets to teach and reinforce content. Ideally, a lesson will make use of the available course book but not use it exclusively, allowing for the inclusion of teacher-provided materials to personalize and enliven the classroom experience.
