In this unit I learned that speaking and writing are the two productive skills. Speaking and writing skills are both used for the same purpose -- to communicate. It's up to the teacher to create the need and desire in the students to communicate.
There are two types of activities--activity and fluency-- which are equally important in getting students to communicate. Accuracy activities, which focus on producing correct language, check students' understanding and language usage. Fluency activites, on the other hand, are focused on allowing students to experiment and be creative with language.
If students are reluctant to speak in the classroom, the teacher must try to encourage the students to interact. There are a number of ways to do this, including using pair-work, group-work, and by giving students time to think and plan about what they're going to say during the activity. It should be the teacher's goal to create an atmosphere where students feel comfortable communicating with the teacher and their fellow students.
And lastly I learned that there a number of additional issues involved in regard to a writing activity as opposed to a speaking activity. In a writing activity not only are there differences in grammar and vocabulary but also in layout and punctuation, spelling, and handwriting.
