Past tense's different aspects can be confusing for learners due to their sequential nature and the frequent lack of equivalents thereof in their L1. Past simple in particular causes a lot of frustration due to the sheer load of requisite memorization of all the irregular forms (only rivaled by that of past participles).
The most frequent mistakes for the other aspects come primarily from auxiliary verbs, and as well as confusing their usage. It was nice to have some clarification for those uses, personally, and I have finally been able to put my finger on some of the questions my fellow teachers ask me about past continuous and past perfect usage (such as the necessity of a point in time and what changes in the meaning consequently). Thinking of things as a timeline helps a lot at this point.
