Unit 9 discusses the importance of lesson planning. As in everything, it is important to have a balance, and lesson planning is no exception. A teacher shouldn't be too rigid nor too flexible, as this can cause the lesson to be too focused on the teacher or there could also be no control over the class direction.
Writing a lesson plan is very useful, as it aids the teacher in various ways, such as keeping track of what has been taught or guiding through what they should teach and how long it should take. However, there should be some conditions in order to be a positive experience for a teacher. Keeping it simple and not trying to script the whole lesson are two of the main conditions.
It is also important for a teacher to do some self evaluating from time to time in order to continuously improve their teaching skills.
Finally, planning a lesson and writing a lesson plan will depend on each teacher, their experience, and how well they know their students.
