Since I mostly teach elementary students, I rarely have to teach grammar, and when I do, I never teach past tense verbs. But I do teach adults too, about once a week. I think it would be helpful to teach them more about past tense because each class I have them tell me about how their week/ weekend was since I last met with them. Often, my students make errors with past continuous and past perfect. I think it would be fun to incorporate some of the example story telling activities. I liked the one where you tell your students the result and they have to come up with a story of how that result happened. I think it would help them be able to more easily express and explain things about themselves, which will allow everyone to share their culture with me and communicate among themselves in English more freely.
