There are a myriad of approaches and methodologies regarding the teaching of languages. Some methods have had heavy use in the past but fallen out of practice as linguists have uncovered more promising theories and schools of thought. However, most methodologies have at least some truth and benefit if used in balance with the others. In this course, the Engage, Study, and Activate (ESA) methodology is primarily taught as it is the most friendly for new teachers and training teachers. Every involves three types of stages: Engage, during which teachers will use activity and discussion to engage the learners and capture their attention; Study, which consists of the teacher using tools (often worksheets or written material) to allow the learners to learn new aspects of the language; and Activate, at which time the teacher will facilitate the learners being as free and communicative with the language they know as well as the new points learned in order to activate that knowledge. While all ESA lessons must begin with an Engage phase and end with an Activate phase, it is not necessary for them to always be so linear and straightforward - while Engage, Study, and Activate is an order which can be effective, a teacher can also use phases more than once during lessons and should feel encouraged to vary the order in which phases are presented to avoid making lessons monotonous and predictable.
