In this unit I learned that there are a number of ways to evaluate a student's progress and language level through use of tutorials, student evaluations, and a variety of tests. These testing and evaluation tools, a teacher uses, help students evaluate their own language level and progress as well as to prepare them for any number of common external examinations.
Testing and assessing students at different stages -- before, during, and after a course -- is a good way to determine the students' progress. Placement tests allow the teacher to gauge the language level of the student so as to put them in the correct class. Similarly, diagnostic tests are given to students at the start of a course to find out what they already know. Diagnostic tests also help the teacher prepare future lessons on areas the test shows students need to improve. Moreover, progress tests are used to periodically assess what language students remember or have forgotten. Progress tests, too, are good for teachers and students as they show what language points require more work or study. And finally, I learned that practice tests are tests that mimic, in format and structure, the actual external exams the students are preparing to take.
