This unit discussed management of the classroom, which involves how the teacher conducts him- or herself, presents the lesson materials / instructions for activities, and encourages participation by the students. Eye contact, physical gestures (with hands, etc), and voice level / intonation should all be used to maintain students' focus, aid their understanding, and keep them engaged with the activities. Though the teacher's use of English is an important model for students, teacher talking time should be limited to those activities that require teacher instruction or directions. How activities are organized and carried out will largely depend upon the size and furnishings of the classroom provided by the school. The teacher will need to make decisions about arrangement of the furnishings to best suit the activities to be performed relative to the type of groupings (individual, pairs, small groups or the whole class) to be employed. Class discipline is best achieved by establishing behavioral rules early on , and then fairly and consistently enforcing them. However, establishing a good rapport from the start between the teacher and students, and among students with each other, can greatly help to avoid many behavioral problems before they arise. Generally, the teacher should strive to achieve a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in the classroom where all students will want to freely and regularly participate. This unit has been a helpful overview of the various issues involved with managing a classroom.
