The four past tenses all refer to actions or states of being that happened prior to the present moment. There are nuances that may be difficult for students to understand for circumstances in which to use each one.
Past simple tense expresses actions that were completed in the past. They are formed simply by adding "ed" to the main verb (for regular verbs), with no auxiliaries for the positive use of the verb. Negatives and questions are formed by using the past tense of the auxiliary verb "do" ("did") with the base form of the main verb.
Past continuous tense expresses actions that were in progress or ongoing in the past, often in reference to another past action or time. It is formed by using the past tense of the auxiliary verb "be" ("was"/"were") and adding "-ing" to the main verb. Negatives and questions are formed by using the auxiliary verb "was"/"were" and adding "-ing" to the main verb.
Past perfect tense expresses actions that began in the past and were completed before another past action. It is formed using the past tense of "have" ("had") and the past participle of the main verb. Negatives and questions are formed using "had" and the past participle of the main verb as well.
Past perfect continuous tense expresses actions that had been ongoing before another past action. It is formed using the past tense of "have" ("had") and the past participle of "be" ("been") and adding "-ing" to the main verb. Negatives and questions are formed using "had been" as well.
Teaching ideas involve describing pictures, acting out scenarios, or telling stories that happened in the past, simulating circumstances that demonstrate the correct situation for each of the 4 past tenses, for example, describing what a student was doing yesterday, or what ongoing action caused a particular action to happen.
