There are three general types of new language to be introduced to a classroom - vocabulary, grammar, and function. All three of these need to be taught in a balanced way for students to learn effectively. Regardless of which of these is being taught, there are four things that students must be able to do in order to learn it: be exposed to it, understand its meaning, understand how it's constructed, and be able to reproduce it. Usually, a teacher will only introduce either a new grammar concept, a new function concept, or a new vocabulary concept in a lesson. While many teachers prefer to make use of straight arrow ESA lessons for grammar and vocabulary and utilize patchwork or boomerang for function, this is not a hard and fast rule whatsoever and should not be thought of even as a suggestion, merely as a tendency. An effective teacher will determine the best manner of teaching on a case-by-case basis.
