Hampton, Georgia TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
The two videos presented show the same lesson being taught by the same teacher to the same students with drastically different results. While there were many differences between the manner of teaching displayed between the two videos, the main discrepancies boil down to two things: organization and attitude. In the first video, the teacher didn't seem to have a real structure, lacked an engage phase, didn't seem to understand his own worksheet, often got flustered, and had an issue with eliciting language through repeated and thorough discussion. However, in the second video, it seemed quite clear that the teacher came prepared; he moved seamlessly from one stage of the lesson to the next, had an effective engage phase, clearly understood his materials and was able to communicate information to his students, and ensured comprehension before moving forward. This, combined with the fact that he used the board more, allowed students to take more and better quality notes. Furthermore, in the first video, the teacher seems disinterested, resentful of his students, dominating, confused, and as if he doesn't want to be there. He often shoots down students and/or uses negative terms to describe them when they make mistakes, and rather than set up more board work or monitor their progress during the worksheet, he goes on his phone multiple times. In the second video, however, he introduces himself, learns their names, calls on all the students and not just some, smiles frequently, is clearly engaged and present, uses positive feedback and mime to elicit target language, and generally creates a positive learning environment and establishes a rapport. During the worksheet, he maintains his engagement in the lesson by checking his lesson plan and getting ready for the Activate phase.
